Choosing a surrogacy agency

Some tips for choosing an agency that's right for you

If you’re considering surrogacy in Canada, you may be figuring out how to choose the right surrogacy agency to help you through the process. With so many agencies available, it can be hard to know which one to select. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a surrogacy agency in Canada.

1. Reputation:

First and foremost, you want to make sure you’re choosing an agency with a good reputation. Do your research and read online reviews to get a better sense of the agency’s track record. Google the agency and see what comes up under News to find media articles mentioning the agency. See what has been discussed in Facebook groups or elsewhere on social media. If you know someone who went through surrogacy, see what they have to share about agencies they used or interviewed.

2. Services:

It’s important to select an agency that offers the services you need. Some agencies specialize in different stages of the surrogacy process and some offer a full range of services Some agencies hold trust funds and manage reimbursements, while others leave that to the intended parents to manage. Make sure the agency you choose offers the services you require.

3. Experience:

When it comes to surrogacy, you want to make sure the agency you choose has experience in the field. Ask about their past files, how long they have been in business and how many surrogacy arrangements they’ve completed. This will give you a better idea of their capabilities.

4. Cost:

Surrogacy can be expensive and it’s important to make sure you’re choosing an agency that fits within your budget. Ask about their fees and any additional costs that might come up during the process. Ask how they manage reimbursements and how much they will want to hold in trust, if anything (note: surrogates in Canada are not allowed to be paid and must show receipts for reimbursements).

5. Location:

Surrogacy laws vary from province to province, so it’s important to select an agency that’s familiar with the laws in your province. Some agencies also offer services in multiple provinces, so consider which one is the most convenient for you.

6. Ratios

If a surrogacy agency has 100 intended parents and only 5 surrogates, your odds are finding a surrogate are poor. Ask the agency if they maintain a "surrogate to intended parent ratio" to ensure you have a reasonable chance of finding a surrogate and are not wasting your time and money.

7. Screening

Some surrogacy agencies take screening very seriously, while others have a more permissive approach. Ask how and why they screen surrogates to ensure you feel confident with the level of screening that is performed. Ask how they find surrogates to satisfy yourself that their recruitment practices, if any, are ethical and lawful.

Choosing an agency is an important decision, so take your time and do your research. Consider all of the factors outlined above and you’ll be able to make the best decision for your surrogacy journey.
